The whole concept of the story was magical. The trailer for this movie just mesmerized me and I was amazed at the creativity behind writing a drama like this.
That being said, something about the movie really bored me. I don't know if I just wasn't in that good of a mood when I watched this or if I'm really just not a "drama" guy... But heck I was really bored in a lot of the scenes in the movie. It's a beautiful film but something was really missing. A big part of it might be the score. I didn't feel it. It could also be the pacing of the whole thing that bogged me down. They all seemed to be moving and talking in slow motion. I'm not sure how Brad Pitt got nominated as best actor for the role either. He really didn't do much acting in the film.
The best part about the film - The effects. You can't tell anymore which parts are CG and which parts are real... Except those baby scenes, it's still pretty obvious that those parts are 3D. And that part wherein his father was running away with Benjamin as a baby - animatronics. A lot of the scenes involved using someone else's body and placing a 3D head of Brad Pitt on that body. Yes, 3D head. Those scenes wherein Benjamin was really old - That wasn't make up. That was a fully 3D generated head. Everything looked so natural. Here's a feature article on the technology they used -
http://features.cgsociety.org/story_custom.php?story_id=4848 I was really amazed at that part wherein Benjamin walked in and he was on his teens I think. He really looked like a freakin' teenager! And I think I read in the article that they were putting in Cate Blanchett's head on a dancer's body. I can't believe they can do all this now. They still used a lot of traditional make up effects... But OMG the 3D scenes were seamless.
I really liked the historical references they made in the film. It kinda made the whole story feel real. Like Teddy Roosevelt visiting the station; Benjamin's stepdad talking about his grandfather's friend killing Abe Lincoln; the Japs attack on Pearl Harbor; the Beatles... I guess I got bored of the film coz I was eagerly waiting to see how the heck Benjamin would die. It took a long time to get there. I was kinda wondering if he was going to be reduced to sperm or something lol xD I was really curious! ;P It got kinda freaky around that part wherein Benjamin turns into this violent-schizo kid and forgets everyone he knows. That part was kinda sad. Freaky and sad.
It was a pretty interesting ride, but the film just didn't touch me enough. I was really expecting to get swept away by the magic of the story but it just didn't happen for me. Eitherway, they made a new leap forward in the effects industry with this one. They can really do anything with 3D nowadays. Can't wait to see where they go next.
I love the poster upstairs.
